Derek Winsor is a Director in the Metros and Civil Division of Mott MacDonald and leads a 160‐strong engineering team that integrates a wide range of geotechnical specialisms with civil engineer design to deliver major below‐ground structures, including large basements, deep shafts and transportation infrastructure; particularly for metro systems and airports. Over a four‐decade career with Mott MacDonald, Derek as worked on numerous hallmark projects in the UK and around the world.  This commenced with his work on the Channel Tunnel as design leader for the UK Terminal cut‐and cover tunnel structures. Following the Channel Tunnel, Derek’s career direction has led him into significant design and management roles on many prestigious UK and international projects, including; Limehouse Link tunnel in London Docklands; the Boston Central Artery, where he managed the design of the world’s largest jacked tunnels, part of the USA’s first $1billion highway interchange; Delhi’s first 10‐station underground metro line; London’s Crossrail project and basements for Heathrow Terminal 5 and Terminal 2B, a 675,000m3 underground space. Most recently Derek has been responsible for two of the largest underground stations on the Doha Metro, where Msheireb station at 40m deep is the countries deepest excavation, which received 12 TBM’s.
